Newsletter - 27th June 2019

From the Acting Principal - Susan McGann

Tuesday we celebrated the shortest day of the year (and one of the coldest). Antarctic expeditioners at Australia’s Casey, Davis & Mawson stations took a dip into the frigid icy waters of the Southern Ocean. Whilst closer to home some members in the Hobart community celebrated this event with a nude swim…but most of us were not that game! The winter solstice is an astronomical phenomenon marking the shortest day, and the time when we are furthest from the sun. It is seen as a celebration of being ‘born again’ – not of flesh but of the spirit. Just as the winter sun is at its weakest, we know it will continue to grow until it reaches its full strength in the summer. We can see our winter months as a time to slow down, to work on regaining strength and as a time to grow and develop as we continue life’s journey.

One of the joys of teaching is watching our students grow and learn during the year whilst they are in our class.  For our teaching staff it has been report writing time! This is a time to reflect upon each student and their journey so far this year at school. Staff have spent many, many hours preparing and writing your child’s mid-year report. It is not possible to provide time during the day for this to happen and teachers have given up an inordinate amount of hours at night and on their weekends…and I know you as parents are appreciative of this. Reports will be given out next Wednesday 29 June. Optional Parent-Teacher consultations will be held at the beginning of Term Three. Details regarding consultations will be emailed to parents next week.

World Youth Day – Mr Simon Lane

Bon voyage to Mr Simon Lane who is heading off to attend World Youth Day in Poland at the end of the term. Simon received a grant to attend this amazing event. World Youth Day is an international Catholic event focussed on faith and youth, it will be celebrated in Krakow, Poland between 25-31 July. We wish him safe travels and look forward to hearing about his wonderful journey upon his return.

All Schools Cross Country

Bright and early yesterday morning a team of 18 students from Grades 4-6 travelled to Symmons Plains for the All Schools Cross Country. They had a very enjoyable day and all the students performed admirably! There were a number of excellent results; with four of our students finishing in the top five for their age group. This allows them selection in the State Team to compete in the Australian Primary Cross Country Exchange to be held in Canberra later this year.

Congratulations to:

            Tom McCallum (G6)                 2nd

            Maddison Brooks (G6)             4th

            Aiden Ryan (G5)                      4th

            Cate Clingeleffer (G4)              5th

 Thank you!

Our Grade Two classes have been lucky over a recent number of weeks to have two Education Students completing their teaching practicum. We bid farewell at the end of the term to Jake Breen who has spent six weeks in 2P and Christopher Lewinski who has been in 2BP for four weeks. We have been fortunate to have such enthusiastic and capable young men participating in the life of our school, and they will be truly missed by our Grade Two students.

Round Robin

Unfortunately due to the condition of the football grounds at Dominic College the Football Round Robin for this Friday has been cancelled.  The Grade 5 & 6 students from Corpus Christi will be participating in a  Netball Round Robin Day at Creek Road Netball Centre. The students have been training in preparation for this day and the rostered games next term. Well done to all for your enthusiasm to participate and have fun! For quite a few students this is an opportunity to try a sport they do not already play and learn some new skills. Many thanks to the Grade 5 & 6 Teachers and the numerous parents who have volunteered to help out as team managers, umpires and coaches – this event is not possible without your support.

Last Thursday evening 41 Corpus Christi students were confirmed by Archbishop Julian Porteous in Corpus Christi Church. The students were excited, looked pretty special and were well and truly ready to answer the Archbishops questions! Congratulations to all those students – we were very proud of you.
